Gardening Tips for a Beautiful Garden

Having a beautiful garden can make an outdoor living area really magical but is not the easiest task to accomplish. Here are some tips to start a flourishing garden.

  • Everyone wants a full and lush garden right away, but it takes time and space for the plants to grow. Do not cram all the plants together when they are first planted or they will not grow. Plants need breathing room to grow.
  • Tall plants should be a couple of feet back from the edge of walkways and patios to give a sense of room to your outdoor living space.
  • When installing pergolas or archways, you want plenty of headroom! Outdoor structures look smaller outside and you don’t want anyone to hit their head. Try to make each structure at least seven feet tall with extra room if you are adorning plants on top.
  • Have paver stones installed professionally. It is important that each stone receives proper installation for secure footing and that you do not choose slick stones, like granite or smooth tile, that is difficult to walk on during rain, snow, or icy conditions.
  • If you are creating garden paths, they should be wide enough for two people to walk side-by-side comfortably.
  • Add texture to your garden by incorporating more than just flowers! Try adding bushes, grass plants, foliage, fruit and berry plants, and some evergreen plants.

Mythbusting Lawn Care

There are many, many myths surrounding proper lawn care. These are so commonly believed that only professional lawn care companies are knowledgeable about the best practices for long-lasting green lawns. Here are some common beliefs.

Myth: The shorter you mow your grass, the less often you have to cut it.

Fact: Too-short grass increases the risk of heat damage, drought, and weed invasion.

Myth: Spring is when you should eradicate dandelions.

Fact: It is more important to kill them off in your fall lawn maintenance to ensure they won’t seed in the spring and summer.

Myth: Spiked shoes is the best way to aerate a lawn.

Fact: Spiked shoes actually create holes that are too small to really accomplish aeration. Instead, aeration is best completed by extracting soil plugs.

Myth: I should water my lawn every day if I want my lawn to be green and lush.

Fact: The amount you should water your lawn is dependent on many different factors and requires more professional analysis to see success with a green and lush lawn. Overall, longer waterings less frequently are better than shorter waterings that are more frequent.
